We were tasked with finding a unicorn — a product marketing manager who had not only built up a product marketing function, but had experience at fintech startups in the past and had launched multiple products. A background in accountancy was a plus that the hiring manager wasn't necessarily expecting.
And we delivered.
Indeed, it took just one phone call. It is rare that we target a single candidate, and rare that we have a brief so specific, but in this instance, we decided that one candidate — and one candidate alone — was the archetype.
This isn't to say that we ignored the process. Despite finding our candidate with a hand-curated sourcing campaign, we ran our 6 agents across the market and the overwhelming conclusion was that our candidate was the archetype, and anyone else would be a 9/10 candidate.
We delivered this information to the client, with our full report on who was in-market, out-of-market, and we had our conversation over the phone with the candidate who was sold on the opportunity.
To frame the opportunity correctly, we took the time to deeply understand the company, what they do, the direction they were headed in, and why they were hiring a founding PMM at this particular stage. This knowledge allowed us to build a concise framework that ensured we were never "selling" to the candidate, but we were aligning their trajectory with the company's.
In the background, we continued to have conversations with the 9/10 candidates, probing their backgrounds for the potential extra 1/10 or extra selling points that we could put across to our client — but with the knowledge that our one candidate was sold on the role, and that the client was sold on the candidate, we saw our candidate throughout the entire process.
