A 24-Hour Search: Content Strategist for Roots

A NYC insurtech startup, looking for its next ramp-up, asked us to find an Insurtech content specialist — someone who knew the industry deeply and who could develop revenue-generating content with a growth mindset. It took us 24 hours to find the successful candidate.

24 hrsto find the successful candidate — from a 35-person search pool across the whole of the US.

We were tasked with finding a content specialist with a solid background in the Insurtech industry in order to help Roots build up an arsenal of content that would deliver pipeline.

The brief was complex, and led to a highly refined search that produced a talent pool of around 35 individuals across the whole of the US. We set out to find:

  • A strong writer, with an evidenced body of successful content
  • Someone who has been embedded within the Insurtech industry
  • Someone who understands how AI agents are working within Insurtech
  • Someone who has a history of understanding how their content has generated revenue — not just a writer who knows how many hits they got

Sourcing & screening

Our approach was to run a number of AI agents independently of each other to run different search types — across publications, company blogs, across LinkedIn, and then other agents that would assess the quality of their work.

We surfaced a large number of names and eliminated many on the first pass — our own background of having been writers ourselves (Gareth has published four books and used to run a magazine in Paris, for instance) meant that we could quickly discern who had been using AI to write, and who had a style that would match with that of Roots.

The outcome

Our first interview with a candidate was a success — it was clear from the off that he understood the industry inside-out, and that he was passionate about not just the quality of his work but the impact of it.

The client immediately agreed, and wanted to see more candidates in order to see if this was a "one-off" and whether there was more quality in the market. There was. We delivered a further 8 candidates from the initial pool of 35, having spoken to over 20 of them. But having weighed up each candidate's approach to content and pipeline growth, our first candidate was always the preferred one, and was hired with a view to a quick start.
