Hello. It's Sunday morning, I have coffee, and I have spent my morning reading a spreadsheet of 1,100 marketing salaries. This is apparently what I do for fun now.
Emily Kramer went through 794 job adverts at private B2B startups and the numbers are blunt. The median for a Director or Head of is $225k. For a VP or CMO it's $300k. And if you work at OpenAI or Anthropic, a senior marketer takes $288k against $178k everywhere else. Sounds great, right - but Digiday reported this week that the median CMO tenure is now 36 months, down from four years in 2010. In software it's 27 months.
So the money at the top has never been better and the job has never been shorter. Two years and three months, if you sell software. Which means the real question isn't what the band is. It's what you can actually get finished inside it.
Pay · Emily Kramer · MKT1 · 1 October 2026
Kramer pulled 1,121 US marketing roles with published salaries and narrowed it to 794 posts across 347 private B2B startups. The medians: $119k at nought to two years, $160k mid, $178k senior, $225k Director or Head of, $300k VP or CMO. Director to VP is a $75k jump, or 33%. Startups that raised in the past year pay about 17% more. OpenAI and Anthropic sit in a tier of their own, at $288k for a senior marketer. And 64% of the adverts mention equity. Two of them gave a range.

Median CMO tenure is now 36 months, down 35% since 2010, drawn from a survey of 13,000 US marketing professionals at companies over 100 staff. Software is the shortest at 27 months average. Only 33% of CMOs have served more than five years, against 7.4 years for the average chief executive. Fortune 500 CMO roles are down to 36% from 55% in 2024, and 46% of CMOs no longer report to the CEO. The data comes from Findem and CMO Huddles, who both sell into this market.

Gartner surveyed 1,303 senior marketing leaders between January and April. 18% have already cut functional roles to automation, 16% created new ones, and nearly a third redesigned roles they already had. By 2030 Gartner expects most high-performing teams to have removed the traditional bottom rungs. Analyst Kristina LaRocca-Cerrone puts it plainly: the biggest risk is mistaking the automation of entry-level tasks for the elimination of the need for entry-level talent.

Member of technical staff is now the dominant title at the frontier labs. On December 2025 LinkedIn data, 39% of Anthropic staff, 31% at OpenAI and 26% at xAI used it, and usage rose roughly 50% year on year across OpenAI, Anthropic, xAI and Microsoft AI. The point is deliberate flattening. Researcher and engineer collapse into one rank instead of ranking PhDs above everyone, a conscious nod back to Bell Labs. Kelly Esten holds CMO and COO at Toast at the same time, nine years in. This is the role consolidation everyone writes about in the abstract, happening to one named person. Her method is subtraction. “I get to supervise, but I don't get to do the work anymore.” She steps in only where her input could change a business outcome, and runs both organisations on two written weekly updates so teams can decide without her. Note the direction of travel. Marketing absorbed operations, not the other way round.

Hello. It's Sunday and I have spent the morning reading about software pricing, which is not how I pictured the weekend going. I need to get out on the bike.
Jason Lemkin went through what his own vendors now charge to let an AI agent in the door. His sums put Salesforce integration traffic at around $83 per million calls and agent traffic at between $5,000 and $100,000 per million. HubSpot meters custom agents through Breeze credits. Atlassian's Rovo runs at a penny a credit, and a basic action costs ten of them. Every one of those is a packaging decision somebody had to make, and then defend, probably this quarter.
Then on Monday Salesforce agreed to buy Listen Labs, reported at around $2bn, for software that interviews customers at scale and builds digital twins to predict how they would react to your message before you send it. So the research is being automated and the price list is being rebuilt at the same time. Guess whose job both of those are.
Pricing · Jason Lemkin · SaaStr · 28 September 2026
The clearest account yet of how agent access is being priced. Salesforce meters third-party agents through MCP and the API and charges Flex Credits per successful call, with agents needing registration. Lemkin's own arithmetic puts integration use at roughly $83 per million calls against $5,000 to $100,000 per million for agent use. HubSpot is metering custom agents and charging per resolution since July. Atlassian's Rovo sits at a cent a credit, ten credits a basic action. His argument is that metering access pushes customers to sync data out locally.
Industry · Constantine von Hoffman · MarTech · 30 September 2026
Salesforce signed a definitive agreement for Listen Labs on 29 September, with other outlets reporting the price at around $2bn. Salesforce has not confirmed a figure. Listen Labs runs AI agents that design studies and conduct interviews across a network of more than 50 million participants in 120-plus languages, and builds digital twins to simulate customer reactions before launch. Founded in 2023 by Alfred Wahlforss and Florian Juengermann, both of whom stay on. Expected to close in Salesforce's fiscal Q4 2027.

Gartner surveyed 1,300 marketing leaders and expects most high-performing teams to have removed the traditional bottom rungs by 2030. 18% have already cut early-stage roles to automation and 16% created new ones. The more awkward number sits alongside it: of 2,350 respondents to Marketing Week's own career survey, 66.5% report an AI skills gap on their team, and that rises to 73.5% among CMOs and directors against 58.8% of junior managers. Gartner's hiring advice is to test how candidates think rather than what they know.

165,925 tech jobs cut so far in 2026. September alone was 10,799, up 77% on August's 6,103, and the year to September is 54% ahead of the same point in 2025. Uber took around 3,300 roles, about 10% of its workforce, in early September. The counterpoint is the useful part: total US layoffs across all sectors fell 18% month on month, so tech moved against the trend. AI has been cited in 120,136 cuts this year, 21% of all announcements.

His words: “We call those 'slop grenades' that people toss at each other. That's definitely a bad thing.” And on the mechanism: “You don't really read it, and now it has to be reviewed by your colleagues, and they are like, 'this doesn't look right.'” Output got cheap to produce and expensive to check, so the cost moved to whoever opens the document.
Marketing Vanguard · Jenny Rooney with Jessica Apotheker · 29 September 2026
Apotheker's case is that CMO vulnerability is structural rather than about performance: more growth asked for, budgets shrinking, complexity rising. She splits marketing into orchestration, art and science and argues each needs managing differently. Her practical claim is the one to listen for, that the job is won or lost on the CFO and CIO relationships, and that pitching AI as an efficiency story gives away the growth ground you should be claiming.
Marketing Against The Grain · Kipp Bodnar and Kieran Flanagan · 1 October 2026 · 31 minutes
A useful argument against the shrinking-teams consensus. Their reading of the data is that the proportion of marketing roles hasn't moved much, and that team shape now matters more than team size. Pod models, the zero-to-one marketer, AI reshaping rather than replacing. One declaration: the hosts are HubSpot's CMO and a former HubSpot growth executive, and the episode points at a HubSpot team-redesign playbook.

London agentic recruiting platform. AI agents handle sourcing, application review and structured screening conversations. $110m raised in total, 7,000-plus companies using it. The headcount plan is the number that matters here: 80 people now, 250 targeted by the end of next year, plus a New York office. The senior marketing seat is already filled, by Stephanie Bowker as Head of Marketing reporting to the CEO, and the old VP Marketing advert is closed. So this is a big build with the marketing leadership in place. Watch for roles underneath it.

The money is earmarked for 50 new roles and scaling operations across Europe, the Americas and Asia. No marketing-specific role is advertised that I could verify, and I could not find a careers page. So the expansion is confirmed and the marketing signal isn't there yet. Three geographies and 50 hires usually produces one eventually.

London premium soda brand, B Corp, founded 2020, $15.7m raised in total and now in around 17,000 doors. This is the strongest stated marketing intent of the week. Consumer marketing and team expansion are named uses of funds, with neighbourhood-level campaigns for Miami, Chicago and Texas, and H-E-B and Whole Foods as retail partners. The goal is to double the business in 2027. Their live job board currently shows a management accountant and a US supply chain manager. The brand roles aren't posted yet.

Open seat · $300,000 to $450,000 base plus equity · listed since February 2026
Five days a week in the office. The role owns all marketing results, reports into the C-suite, works closely with senior sales leadership, and covers demand generation, events, budget and building the marketing team across enterprise and vertical SaaS. The listing has been up since February. That sits alongside the $350m announced on 29 September and the three other New York marketing roles currently advertised, so this is a company building a function at the top of the published band. If you want a CMO seat with money behind it, it is there.
Open seat · $150,000 to $220,000 · NYC office at 1239 Broadway or remote US
No-code AI workflow platform for enterprises, founded 2023, Series A, 55 employees. The listing is headed Head of Marketing and the body is titled Head of Growth, so the brief spans both, and it is to build and lead the growth team.
